Strongly Coupled Coulomb and Nuclear Plasma in Inner Crusts of Neutron Stars
نویسندگان
چکیده
Matter of subnuclear density in the inner crusts of neutron stars consists of neutron-rich atomic nuclei immersed in strongly degenerate relativistic gas of electrons and strongly nonideal liquid of neutrons. Thermodynamic and kinetic properties of this matter are greatly affected by Coulomb and nuclear interactions and can be studied, in principle, from observations of thermal radiation of young (age <∼ 100 yr) neutron stars.

Coulomb Plasmas in Outer Envelopes of Neutron Stars
Outer envelopes of neutron stars consist mostly of fully ionized, strongly coupled Coulomb plasmas characterized by typical densities ρ ∼ 10 4 –10 11 g cm −3 and temperatures T ∼ 10 4 – 10 9 K. Many neutron stars possess magnetic fields B ∼ 10 11 –10 14 G. Recent theoretical advances allow one to calculate thermodynamic functions and electron transport coefficients for such plasmas with an accu...
متن کاملElectron νν̄ bremsstrahlung in a liquid phase of neutron star crusts
Neutrino emissivity from the electron νν̄ bremsstrahlung in the liquid layers of the neutron star crusts is studied. Nuclear composition of matter in neutron star crusts is considered for various scenarios of neutron star evolution. For the deep layers of the crust, the compositions of cold catalyzed matter, accreted matter and hot matter (T >∼ 5 × 10 9 K) are shown to be very different, and thi...

The nuclear pasta — a novel state of matter having nucleons arranged in a variety of complex shapes — is expected to be found in the crust of neutron stars and in core-collapse supernovae at subnuclear densities of about 10 g/cm. Due to frustration, a phenomenon that emerges from the competition between short-range nuclear attraction and long-range Coulomb repulsion, the nuclear pasta displays ...
متن کاملDiffusive currents and Coulomb separation of ions in dense matter
We derive diffusive currents in strongly coupled Coulomb ion mixtures in dense stellar matter. Coulomb coupling in the presence of gravity and electric fields, induced by gravity owing to plasma polarization, creates a specific diffusion current which separates ions with the same A/Z (mass to charge number ratios) but different Z. This Coulomb separation can be important in white dwarfs and neu...
متن کاملMicroscopic Study of Nuclear “Pasta” by Quantum Molecular Dynamics
Collapse driven supernovae (SNe) and the following formation of neutron stars (NSs) are the most dramatic processes during the stellar evolution. These objects provide not only astrophysically significant phenomena but also interesting material phases inside them; both are strongly connected with each other. At subnuclear densities in NS crusts and SN cores, nuclei are expected to have exotic s...
